Inside Chanel – COCO

INSIDE CHANEL COCO

“Well…I must confess…some lies, if we want to call them so, must have slipped out…but it’s not for everyone to reinvent one’s own past, imagine it as you wanted it to be and in such a credible way, blimmey! Crying my eyes out?!? And why then? There are other things made for crying! At the beginning life didn’t smile at me but grimaced instead but taught me a lot…more than I expected. I preferred to give an adventurous look to my past, as if reading a book and identifying with the most intriguing character , living their life and believing that the same cheerfulness, sweetness, arts, luxury and love were part of my life too even if they weren’t at all. I preferred to tell that my father hadn’t left me and my sisters in an orphanage after my mum’s death and I didn’t want to tell that I wasn’t raised by nuns but by two old aunts who didn’t love me at all. I preferred to tell that man who had left us hadn’t done that to leave us alone but because he had gone to America to make his fortune. I preferred to tell that my nickname, COCO, was the name my dad had given me and not the name of the audience of my cabaret dance on the tune of “Qui qu’a vu COCO dans le Trocadéro“. I preferred to tell that I had met Etienne Balsan during a holiday to visit a grandfather that I’ve never known. But it’s true that man I loved, Balsan, taught me the love for horses so that when I was galloping I thought I was a real queen.  That man I love made me discover a brand new world, a world I didn’t know, made of people trapped by appearance and conventions, prisoners of the impression they wanted to make, prisoners of their gestures respecting the rules of a game for the rich. And even if I lied on Pau, the place where I met Boy Capel, it’s true that the look of that sensitive man was able to melt the armour of my heart and the solid cuirass of my ambitions. With him, I started to think that everything could be told with the utmost sincerity…as I truly loved him and I felt he truly loved me too. Handsome and sweetheart, generous and rich, clever and noble. Everything I hadn’t had in my life before was with him, he taught me life, he listened to me and made me believe that I had something to say and the world was there to listen to me too. He fulfilled my dreams and satisfied my heart. He supported my idea of independence, of freedom allowing my style to come out and to impress the others. He loved my soul and my style for women. My freedom could have been theirs too and in my way of doing fashion there was the desire to release a woman’s appearance but her soul too. I was twenty when I founded my fashion maison thanks to the man of my dreams…who has always supported me…till the end of his days. I kept on doing what we started together and I did that not because I was an artist, or a business woman but the work of someone looking for freedom, the desire to escape and become the centre of my personal universe. And passions always have the last word, they hide behind a bunch of violets or behind a simple act of charity, able to get rid of the rigour and austerity of my early childhood…and, over time, memories fade and change their look.”
