.

It was back in 1983 when her first album “MADONNA” came out and today, after almost 30 years,

it’s the turn of her twelfth, the last of a long series, called “MDNA”.

I am dedicating this post to my music icon, to her image,

her chameleon style, her strong ego, so often centre of criticism,

able to lead trends and fashion as no one else before.

But how did this girl from Michigan become the queen of pop?

I was born in 1976 and she graduated that same year, after two years college

she dropped out to move to move to New York, to play it for real,

to take dance classes from Martha Graham, the great American dancer

and pioneering choreographer, the “mother” of modern dance.

In 1979 she was recruited as dancer and chorister

In the “BORN TO BE ALIVE” video, shot in Paris, but she didn’t make the best of that experience…

She was born to be famous…and after this project she left Europe to head back home,

to America, the dreamland, to follow her dream that came true!

She began with a punk-rock, that did not work,

she simply knew by instinct, she had to try something new out

something like “dance”, welcomed by the people of the big apple…

with “EVERYBODY”, Mark Keramins, a DJ celebrity of those years,

who, impressed by her music, introduced her to the Sire Records.

The year 1983 marks the beginning of her grand career.

Her first album “MADONNA”,

Yielding the hit singles HOLIDAY, LUCKY STAR, BORDERLINE,

obtained 5 platinum awards also thanks to the newly born MTV,

showing the world the rebel provoking image of Madonna

soon followed and mocked by all teenagers around the US.

After a year her second release “LIKE A VIRGIN”,

a milestone of her successful strategy for the years that followed:

constant image change, endless freshening of her character…

Madonna does not confine change to her music style,

but she has always applied it to her way of meeting the public, as if wanting to say:

“This record is what I am and how I feel now!”

The film industry is very attractive to her too, she acted in

“DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN” in 1985,

the sound-track containing the number one single

in the United Kingdom “INTO THE GROOVE”

Soon afterwards “SHANGAI SURPRISE” and “WHO’S THAT GIRL” fell flat

But perseverance brought her new successes.

After twelve years with “EVITA” Madonna showed the critics

how to be awarded with a Golden Globe.

And why not help a beauty male model too?

He could no longer strip-down in a Laundromat ,

to stone-wash his pair of Levi’s 501, and wait there

only dressed in his boxer shorts…

He was Nicholas Ivor Kamen and in 1987 Madonna wrote for him the single

“EACH TIME YOU BREAK MY HEART”

released in Nick Kamen’s the first album

where she sang the backing vocals.

The same year Madonna performed in Italy, Turin, with platinum colored short hair.

I will never forget that:  ”CIAO ITALIA, CIAO TORINO, HELLO EVERYBODY!”

As I won’t for that passionate kiss given to her

baby dancer Chris, which caused a sensation.

And if I thought her provoking attitude would stop there,

would be restricted to her name choice MADONNA,

as it was her fist christening name

and her dead mother’s one, I was totally wrong…

Somebody said once the Church is untouchable?

Madonna could not care less and in ’89 she released “LIKE A PRAYER”,

a musical cocktail mix of rock, R&B, Gospel,

from her fourth studio album of the same name.

In the single video clip,

she is dark haired and with stigmata on her hands,

she kisses a black angel and dances with burning crosses in the background.

Some banish her, but contrariwise others fall for her and her irreverence,

her outrageous bravery, her overwhelming huge personality.

In 1990 in “DICK TRACY she played Dick’ girlfriend Breathless Mahoney,

with Warren Beatty, who, to get right inside the character,

also became her companion in life.

As with her former husband, Sean Penn, it is not a long lasting relationship,

seems like actors can’t keep up with her,

later on her personal trainer, Carlos Leon, in ’96

gave her a child, her fist baby-girl, Maria Lourdes,

and Guy Ritchie who married her in 2000,

gave her a baby boy Rocco.

But let’s go back to where I left her in 1990 …the year of VOGUE in which Madonna,

back to blond fluffy hair, performed the Vogueing, a stylized modern dance

widely practiced in the gay ballroom scene and clubs throughout the US,

characterized by model-like poses that were first inspired by Vogue magazine,

She not only turns it into a “fashionable” dance,

but boosts it to a true costume phenomenon.

The same year she started her Blond Ambition Tour,

which besides being a world tour of live shows,

was a transgressive witness to a vast repertory she

could perform and showed the world the less traditional way possible…

and why not make a movie about it?

A B&W documentary telling all about the tour behind the scenes ,

on stage, backstage, about the pop-star under the fore and private life,

right down into intimacy…”IN BED WITH MADONNA”.

The year 1992 saw the beginning of the “SEX stage” of her carrier,

a multimedia planned strategy which sees the singer as never before.

Erotic, diabolic…in a few months follow:

a photographic book “SEX” with Steven Meisel,

the album “EROTICA”, the first album released by the record company founded by Madonna,

and the movie “BODY OF EVIDENCE”.

All her work is driven by sexual themes, about her favourite practices, about sadomasochism.

The provocative content shown years before with ”JUSTIFY MY LOVE”,

written together with Lenny Kravitz, was only a hint of what was going to be,

some critics wrongly said “she had gone too far” and that her career was over.

After Versace’s ad campaign, in’98 Madonna is a…. “RAY OF LIGHT”, a hit single with which she

got three Grammy Awards, the same year she kissed Raoul Bova in Max Factor commercial,

the same year of “AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME” and of “BEAUTIFUL STRANGER”,

the year of “FROZEN” in which every single woman on the planet tried a henna tattoo…

two years later, and not by chance, yoga becomes one of the most practiced sports and that

after her movie “THE NEXT BUG THING?” with Rupert Everett.

In 2003 “AMERICAN LIFE” is released, an album with spiritual and political contents,

where a strong position against Bush politics is evident,

the record sells only 1 million copies,

but only two years after, in 2005, she is back over the top;

her tenth album “CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR”

obtains a Grammy Awards as best electronic dance album,

yep, back to the beginning, back to dance.

“HUNG UP” is the single hit of her career,

and the tour “CONFESSIONS” is a sold-out,

the relative DVD is also awarded a Grammy…the seventh actually.

Then it was the “HARD CANDY” round with an album that sees her collaboration with

Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West.

Almost there… Madonna has opened the year 2012

with a second “MASTERPIECE” Golden Globe, for the best original song (motion picture) from the movie “W.E.”

And her Super Bowl presentation of “GIVE ME ALL YOUR LUVIN””,

First single from her super-longed for new album, where she is again a cheerleader,

back to an almost twenty year old teen-ager, when she performed for the Rochester Adams High School team.

Madonna has announced three dates for her World Tour: Rome, Milan, Florence.

“Who’s that girl?” …perhaps: that is the question!

She is Madonna, “When you see her, say a prayer and kiss your heart goodbye”

‘cause she is a magnetic woman she will always make me wonder!
