Marcello Signore: scrittore a tempo indeterminato!

marcello signore

PerchéLo chiedi a uno scrittore, cosa posso risponderti?

It wasn’t a dark and stormy night, yet a hot summer afternoon when a friend who I was dining with and who was going to have a baby, told me of a friend of his who was about to publish a book about fatherhood. The title was: “PADRE A TEMPO INDETERMINATO” (Open-term dad) and I was literally amazed! I’m writing a book on this theme too but with two main differences….the first one is that I offer a woman’s point of view and the second is that he has finished the book and I haven’t! Since then I’ve always wanted to interview him and today I’m glad to introduce you to MARCELLO SIGNORE. Social writer, born in Naples in 1988, living in Milan who with his funny “tutorials”, if we can call them so, recorded at “LUNCH TIME” has made a hit on the web. In 2011, he is asked to present a TV program called  “Mi chiamo NERD” and aired on La3 channel and the following year, Marcello becomes a blogger for the Huffington Post Italia and a new guest of  “Occupy Deejay” on DeejayTV. Telling tales is his passion, either with videos or posts, he always hits the core also with his first book “PADRE A TEMPO INDETERMINATO” (“Open-term Dad”). I met him in Milan during the fashion week and while drinking a coffee we had a nicer chat together.

1. Hi Marcello, I’d like to be frank with you and I must admit that I was most impressed by your free way of expressing your thoughts, with no fear and almost “naked” before an audience you don’t know. It isn’t easy how do you manage? This is life…it can happen with a video, a book, a TV program and I like it, Americans would say “no pain, no gain”. I talk about the things I know, I like and I believe that my passion is recognised and understood. 2. With your brilliant wit you have found the right way to pass your message on, involving the audience but where has this winning inspiration come from? It was some years ago, I was editor in chief at Gay TV and on our Youtube channel there were no videos, so I thought we should add something and I said to myself: “why not me?”. I focused on that idea and I started to talk about things our readers could be interested in. Then, during the editing phase, I decided to add the “tit-for-tat” piece with TV series, film frames and so on. It was quick, funny and frank and the audience liked it. 3. TV and the web, an apparently easy communication channel but I imagine you while sitting and writing your texts for every single video! Am I wrong if I say that these small but well prepared texts have been your trial test before embarking on your career as a writer? Yes, I’d say that everything means writing to me. Even if the “PAUSA PRANZO” videos are short, the “script” needed to be written down properly. Even the “inserts” from movies were good and “Pausa Pranzo” has become really peculiar and popular at the same time. I hope not to end like Dan Brown who is remembered only for the “Da Vinci Code” (he’s smiling), still today, after five years, everybody keeps saying that it’s “the best thing” that I’ve ever done, even if I was young and with no experience and made many “mistakes”.  And I have done many other things since that web series….my book, for example. 4. When did you come up with the idea of writing a book? I’ve always felt a creative urge and I must thank my family as they brought me up in such a fantastic and imaginative way. We didn’t use to watch TV at home, we did something else. I’ve always loved to learn new things since I was a child, reading for example. When I was two years old, I decided that I could learn to read, I had my audio-cassette with fairy tales, I learnt them by heart and my mum told me when it was time to turn the page of the book, I pretended I could read. I used to go to bed very early at night and this passion for reading has followed me over the years, if I couldn’t sleep there was my Harry Potter book on my bedside table, I didn’t like the book very much but there was much of me in the character of Harry Potter. I don’t know when exactly I decided to write my own book as I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer and it has happened. 5. Why taking about fatherhood? Fatherhood is an excuse to describe a special event that is able to change your life forever, the turn of the screw that will mark your way. In my book, it is a girl but my tale wants to reach a broader public than that of single parents. My book has been taken as a hand-book for dads and I appreciate that even if I didn’t think of it while I was writing it. Perhaps I’ve managed to hit the core, to capture a moment and this only happens when you write about personal emotions. I think this is a basic rule of writing: nobody can write of something they don’t know. And I’d like to be a daddy…Even if you’re so young? In life some things happens out of your control. I’m young, true, but I’ve grown up a bit like a mosaic, I didn’t follow a straight path, so why not? Desires…there are people who are not brave enough to reveal and express them as they’re afraid they won’t be able to fulfil them as if they were covered by a sort of “insurance policy” stating: “if my desires don’t fulfil, nobody will ever know what they are”. And this is wrong because when you say it loud, when you express your wishes, they seem true…it works! 6. The main character in your book is Michael, he moves from Milan to Los Angeles and he finds out he has baby girl, you said that this girl is a universal metaphor symbolising big changes in life and I ask you: what has changed your life? Generally speaking, I’d say it was the time spent in Los Angeles but if I had to mention a specific moment, well (he’s laughing) I remember it was October 31 2008 and we were celebrating Halloween, I dressed up like Hulk, I was all covered in green, scraps of cloth and totally drunk at five in the afternoon. I was with my friends in Santa Monica, it was crowded and everybody was looking at me, I was laughing and making friends with a Roman gladiator, then I also got myself in a fight, it was more an atmosphere than a single moment, quite difficult to describe. But on that day I realised that there was nothing I couldn’t have done in life…I was “QUIET AND STILL”, an expression that I’ve used in my book too and a sentence tattooed on my back. If in the middle of a tempest, you are able to find peace and calm and have a general vision about the world, there’s nothing you won’t be able to do. Think about it, life never gives us something we can’t bear. 7. I won’t ask you what kind of dad you would like to be, everybody has already asked you this, but in one of your interviews, you talked about fairly tales and I know well that when you’ll be dad one day, you’ll have to read thousands of tales to your baby, what is your favourite? And why? You’re asking a writer, what can I say? I’d try and write one for my baby, I’ve already written tales for my nieces, I think I’d like to dedicate something mine. 8. Your next book? It’s already in the air, it will be published next year (better not say it as this is the first time I’ve talked about my new book “in public”:P) it is a different story, quite complex. Loads of surprises, “Easter eggs”, bangs and a spectacular “coup de theatre”! 9.My last traditional question, a secret wish? I don’t like secrets and I don’t like to hide my wishes and close them in a box as it seems they are not handy, don’t you think?
